Loving someone else is easy. You can love your parent, spouse, child, friend with all your heart and soul. Try this simple exercise: Think of a person you love. Sit down and make a list of everything you love about them and see how fast the page fills. It’s easy to see all their beautiful traits, whether it’s external or internal. Even when they make you mad, it’s still easy to love them.
Loving yourself can be a little more difficult. Take that same piece of paper and make a list of everything you love about yourself. I bet that requires a lot more thought and takes much more time.
It’s time to love ourselves as easily and as much as we love others.
This Valentine’s Day, let’s celebrate all those that we love – including ourselves!
Here’s a few ways to practice Self-Love this Valentine’s Day and every day:
Think positive thoughts about yourself. Start your day off with a mantra that encourage self-compassion, and keep that mantra in your head and heart throughout the day. And whenever a negative thought about yourself sneaks into your mind, quickly replace it with a positive one.
Practice acts of kindness towards yourself. Make yourself healthy and delicious foods, wear clothes that make you feel good about yourself, and take time to care for your health by going to your favorite exercise or yoga class. You can even buy yourself a little treat that makes your heart happy.
Be Present. Take time every day for meditation or mindfulness. Sneaking 5-10 minutes a few times a day to eliminate distractions and just be in the present moment can make a huge difference in how you feel.
Set yourself for victory. Don’t expect too much from yourself. While we all want to be a superhero, we are only human. Don’t overschedule your days. Make sure you get enough sleep, downtime and nutrition. If you are having an off day, that’s ok. Don’t beat yourself up over it. Know we all have good and bad days – and that makes us human, not less than human!
Happy Valentine’s Day! You are LOVED!!
