When and how did you start practicing yoga?
In the middle of sixth grade, I decided I HAD to make the Middle School Dance Team. However, one of the audition requirements was a split on at least one side. I was not at all naturally flexible, so I immediately went out and bought a yoga video. I fell in love with how it made me feel. Soon, I found a local teacher, Stephanie, and went to her classes religiously (always the youngest person in every class). In case you were wondering- yes, I did make the dance team, and I mastered the splits!v
How has it helped you grow as a person?
When I first began my yoga practice, I felt very disconnected to my body. I did not appreciate it or treat it with the care and respect needed in order to maintain a healthy lifestyle. My yoga practice has helped (and continues to help) build strength in my body. This, in turn, has led to increased body awareness and confidence.
What should students expect from your class?
Students should expect a welcoming environment in which all levels are encouraged. Students should expect a challenge, while simultaneously being able to unwind and recharge. I like to intermix movement with static stretches to get the best of both worlds!
Be Yoga has a number of class styles. Which is your favorite, and why?
Slow Flow is my favorite style, although I love them all. To me, Slow Flow is a wonderful balance of effort and ease. I am able to challenge myself, while moving at a slow enough pace that I can truly listen to what is going on in my body.
What element of yoga philosophy fascinates you the most?
I really enjoy studying the five yamas (ahimsa, satya, asteya, brahmacharya, aparigraha). Ahimsa, or non-harming, fascinates me the most. Often times, we humans serve as our worst critics. We say things to ourselves that we would never say out loud to another person. Once I started understanding ahimsa, I became more mindful of how I was “speaking” to myself. I love talking about this aspect of yoga philosophy in my classes.
What do you like to do when you’re not doing Yoga?
I love to sing! I like to sing at local open mics, weddings, churches, etc. I am currently working to improve my piano skills, as well. Charlotte has so much to offer, so I like going out to check out new restaurants and local spots with my family and friends. I enjoy trying new restaurants and traveling with my boyfriend.
Great class! The perfect class to get me going again, it was paced perfectly with clear and concise instructions for proper positioning and movement. Thanks!Becky A.
Allison does such a good job of balancing challenging flows with enough time for recovery in between and has such a genuinely positive energy!Gricel Orellana
