When and how did you start practicing yoga?
I began practicing yoga as a college student in 2012. As a former dancer, I was looking for something that was movement based but wasn’t dance. I didn’t really care for the meditative aspects of yoga, but liked the physical practice. I didn’t really start my true yoga journey until spring of 2013 where I first when to Be Yoga and fell in love.
How has it helped you grow as a person?
Yoga has helped change my life drastically. I’ve changed negative coping strategies to positive ones and I have become less reactionary and more grounded in the present. Yoga has helped develop who I am, how to treat myself and others, and how to be content and happy.
What should students expect from your class?
Students should expect to be challenged in a lighthearted, welcoming, meditative setting. The student will be challenged to grow deeper in their physical practice as well as spiritually and contemplatively. Expect to build a lot of internal heat and sweat and have fun exploring the poses together!
Be Yoga has a number of class styles. Which is your favorite, and why?
I love all styles, but slow flow has become my favorite as it incorporates deep meditation through strong poses and nice, relaxing, long stretches. My body and mind feels clear after I practice slow flow.
What do you like to do when you’re not doing Yoga?
I’m always practicing yoga off my mat. You can typically find me with my cats and my family. I am in college at Winthrop and that takes up a lot of my time, but I always make sure to find time for my family and friends.

I have enjoyed several classes that Emily has instructed. My favorite is a challenging Saturday morning Slow Flow class. She is always aware of the mixed levels of practice and offers a multitude of modifications that can enhance each yogi’s practice. I look forward to her class as it helps set the tone for a great weekend!

I first began my yoga practice to help with my terrible migraines.  Unexpectedly, yoga has become a part of my everyday life and has made a huge difference in my outlook on life.  I have also noticed a great difference in my body.  My first class at Be with Emily Grom will be an experience that I will always cherish and never forget.  I was new to practicing yoga and was very nervous.  Emily made me feel at ease and was very helpful throughout the entire class.  Emily’s Slow Flow class is challenging, yet enjoyable.  Practicing with her challenges me to new heights and I leave with a sense of accomplishment and my body and mind feeling better.  I love her messages in each class as they are relatable to many situations.  She continues to give encouragement and new ways of looking at different situations.  I used to need a reminder to slow down and breathe, now, through my yoga practice, I am starting to slow down and breathe more often outside of the yoga studio.  Yoga has now become a necessity in my routine and I have Emily, as well as others at Be, to thank.  I look forward to each and every time I am able to come to my mat!

I started taking Emily’s Slow Flow class after it was recommended to me by another instructor at Beyoga to help me work on my form and practice and I have loved it from day one! It is the best way to start my weekend. Emily always starts the class off with some sort of reflection and motivating words with often adding in a personal testimonial. I love how challenging her class is and I always leave feeling like I had the best workout of my mind, body and spirit! I started the class only having done aerial yoga for a year prior and really not knowing what to expect and I have been amazed how much my practice has improved and how much stronger I have become. She guides each class with words of encouragement to challenge yourself and provides guidance to all levels from beginners to more experienced yogis. It’s usually a large class, but she manages to provide individual attention when needed. Great instructor and class to add to your practice!!

Emily brings a sense of both calm and anticipation with her yoga instruction.  Her approach has a way of peeling away the stressors of the week and allows you to focus on the here and now.  I am grateful for what Emily brings to my practice and how she pushes me to go beyond my perceived limitation.

I will repeat what another member said to me “coming to your class is like going to church” – you come away feeling so grateful.  Your style flows at a perfect pace with the right mix of poses & challenges.   Thanks for making a difference for me & so many others – yoga has completely changed my life!
