When and how did you start practicing yoga?

I started practicing with yoga DVD’s in my early twenties. After I moved to North Carolina in 2008 I was looking for group activities to meet new people and enjoyed exploring different studios here in Charlotte.

How has it helped you grow as a person?

I always joke that yoga “calms the crazy”, but in fact it is the truth! Yoga helps me to realize how full of potential I am, and reminds me to be kind and gentle to myself and others. I used to struggle with passing lots of judgments and having an opinion about everything, but knowing how to be open to suggestion and learning how to listen has helped me to become a more tolerant person to be around. My yoga practice continues to inspire me to be a better person and for that I am eternally grateful.

What should students expect from your class?

Being a self-professed anatomy geek from my past life as an xray tech, there tend to be a lot of alignment queues in my classes. I enjoy guiding not only physically but also spiritually, and will usually have a quote or thought from something I’m currently reading as an offering to the class. Creating a class theme in this way allows my students to learn more about the philosophy and history of yoga, while keeping it relevant to every day life.

Be Yoga has a number of class styles. Which is your favorite, and why?

My favorite style of yoga differs from day to day, depending on what my body is telling me it needs. THAT in itself is my favorite thing about Be Yoga! It’s a smorgasbord of yoga offerings!!!

What element of yoga philosophy fascinates you the most?

I’m most fascinated with the depth of the yogic philosophies. I know that I will be a lifelong student of yoga and there is no shortage of information for me to learn from. I particularly enjoy learning more about the Yoga Sutra’s of Patanjali, so that I can bridge the gap for my students using terms everyone can understand and use examples all can relate to.

What do you like to do when you’re not doing Yoga?

I like to create things and I always have some sort of ongoing project. I enjoy refinishing furniture and have found creating art with mixed media extremely interesting! I am fascinated with herbalism and essential oils and enjoy learning how we can heal and protect with this age old knowledge. I make all kinds of products for health and beauty with organic products and have established the brand Somya, which means “inspired by” in Sanskrit. My greatest inspiration comes from my loving husband Josh and our two children, Jack and Charlotte. As a family, we enjoy being outside and having a dog helps us get out everyday. We like to explore and make travel a priority, and although it’s not always easy with two small children it is always quite the adventure!
